To the Seniors... Class of 2024

I was looking at the Bible today & for some reason the first verse that popped into my head was Matthew 6:26-28.

" Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your Heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?

And who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure to his stature or to the span of his life?

And why should you be anxious about clothes? Consider the lilies of the field and lean thoroughly how they grow; they neither toil nor spin."

Anytime we worry, this verse can be a really great one to go back & think on... but the time it really stuck in my mind was November 2010.

I was up in a box blind deer hunting and while the weather was nice and everything was calm, I was so uneasy.

I had 6 months until I graduated high school and had no idea what I wanted to do.

While everyone says you get seniorities... you do, but it's not a 100% blissful time... because there's this pressure we put on ourselves that after you're 18 & graduate, you're then off to the real world that's filled with choices, bills, planning for your future etc.

It just feels like after that, stuff is on you.

During this sit though, I was wondering what the heck I even wanted to do degree wise, and then wondering if I should move away from home or just commute.

Then, all of a sudden my focus turned to these 2 little birds just hopping around having just a beautiful little happy day on the ground.

(So basically they felt opposite of me ;) )

They weren't stressing where their next meal was coming from, where they would sleep, how they would stay cool when the sun went down, what predators may be after them etc...

Then that verse talking about not even the birds have to worry about life because their Creator made them, made me think "Then why do I have to worry when I'm God's Daughter & not jsut a bird?".

If you're a senior and relate to this, you may have some anxiety about what your next steps are, but don't sit on the stress too long.

Nobody really knows what they're doing.

I ended up getting an Associates in Applied Technology & a Bachelors in Music Business but before I graduated I decided I didn't want to move to Nashville anymore- I wanted to be near my family. So I stayed, nannied for my nieces, worked for my family's mud disposal, then a wheat company, then started a boutique with my mom, got married, bought a house back in the town I grew up in & now I'm writing this.

My life went nothing like I thought it would that day I was 'planning it all out'

while hunting.

When I was a senior I thought I nailed down most my future plans because that's what you should do... know what you're doing... but my goodness, I never expected that I would own a boutique or nanny for my nieces or get a degree & then change my mind.

And it all worked out just fine.

I have never been without. And my husbands path took him all over from home school to Rose State College, to Texas, to New Mexico, back here to help his brother who had knee surgery & now we are together.

His plans back in high school I'm sure didn't include moving a lot and coming back here to marry me, but that's how things worked out & we couldn't be happier.

SO.... if you're a Senior & nervous about your future, my advice would be "Just do the next right thing". If the next right step for you is college, then apply. If it's cosmetology school, then apply there. If it's going straight into the workforce so you can move up in your current job, then good luck!

Once you're in those spots, do the NEXT right thing. That can be with dating, internships, moving etc. Just take things one step at a time & don't try to plan your whole life because it most likely won't go that way anyway ;)

And all the while, trust that God's plan may feel a little willy nilly but just like Matthew 6:26-28, He has got the birds, the crops and then of course, He has His children, being you. He won't leave you hanging as long as you walk with Him.
